In 1764, land was granted to John McDowell from the Crown Governor of the Colony of NC. Mr. McDowell grew wheat, cotton and corn on his plantation. In 1775, the plantation was purchased by William Cleghorn, thus Cleghorn’s namesake! In 1837, the Manor House was built, the house survives to this day!
Cleghorn Plantation was passed down over the years until 1972 when it was transformed into Cleghorn Plantation Golf and Country Club by famous golf course designer George Cobb. Mr. Cobb has designed well over 100 golf courses, most famously the Augusta Par 3 Course and Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC. Quail Hollow has hosted many PGA Tour tournaments over the years but none more important than this year’s (2017) PGA Championship!
